The Eighth Anual Spring Boot Camp at Candler Park
Coming Spring 2009

Previous Boot Camps at Candler Park

Boot Camp is back! Jaye is excited to welcome you to the eighth year of Boot Camp in the park.

This exciting eight-week program is designed to challenge, motivate and get your bootie in tip-top shape just in time for the summer.

A former Army Reservist, Jaye created this exercise class just like the morning PT (physical training) session she led over twenty years ago at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Unlike her drill sergeants who barked orders and used intimidation tactics, Jaye's teaching style is tough, yet supportive and encouraging.

Using good, old-fashioned grass drills and calisthenics, each 90 minute class will target all major groups and help you burn body fat, and increase strength, muscle tone, cardiovascular endurance, and flexibility. Then, dust off your competitive skills for some fun team races!

Depending on your individual fitness level you’ll enjoy a walk, jog or run through gorgeous, green scenery on a two-mile cardio course.

De-stress and enjoy the sweet sounds of singing birds as you congratulate your success and conclude class with a short, meditative stretching session under the softly swaying trees and Atlanta blue sky.

Mondays at 7:00 pm.
This class is ideal for intermediate to advanced fitness levels.

Wednesdays at 7:00 pm and Saturdays at 10:00 am.

FIT MOMS Stroller Workout with Baby

Need to shed pregnancy pounds?

FIT MOMS! Stroller Workout is a six week postnatal fitness program designed especially for moms to enjoy with their babies. Fit mom Jaye Crawford developed this program with the needs of all mothers in mind: exercise time, baby-bonding time, and fun time outside with other sleep-deprived moms.

Each 50 minute class blends power walking with carefully selected exercises at interval stations to tone and strengthen all major muscle groups, especially the core, while increasing cardiovascular endurance and flexibility. FIT MOMS! starts at a safe baseline, and progresses in intensity each week. Class begins at the playground, then utilizes the PATH. Babies, toddlers, and stroller-sized children enjoy a nice ride then join the group for the final exercises of class.

FIT MOMS! is a great way to begin, transition to, or maintain a healthy, fitness routine. Spouses take class for FREE!

Readers of ASFM know that page 17 of each issue is reserved to showcase the physique and story of Atlanta's finest fitness professionals. Jaye is honored to grace the page in the 2006 August issue.

"When ASFM contacted me to appear in the August issue, I saw an opportunity to inspire other women, especially mothers. We are all busy juggling a zillion responsibilities, but mothers (especially working and single) face even greater challenges. Being a good parent requires so much of our time and it's easy to fall off our own to-do list. After years of developing strategies with my mom clients to fit exercise into busy schedules, I am on a mission to tell moms everywhere that if I can do it, you can, too! I wanted the photo to show that I am more than just another toned woman in a fitness magazine. That's why I wanted my daughter Summer to accompany me. She's on the top of my list of priorities, but for an hour or so, several times a week, it's all about me," says Jaye.

Introducing the Fun Fitness Scholarship Program

Ever wonder how Americans experiencing financial challenges find the funds to participate in fitness programs?

We do. We know that personal health and fitness are benefits you can't afford to live without. We believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to be fit.

At Fun Fitness, we are a community that cares. In these tough economic times, we know for a fact that some of you are struggling just to make ends meet, which probably means forgoing the price of fitness programs. This is why we created the Fun Fitness Scholarship Program.

Each season, we will award community scholarships to individuals in need. Our only requirement is that you "Pay It Forward" within one year of receiving your scholarship. We know these scholarships are going to make a difference in people's lives. As a fitness community, Fun Fitness is grateful for the opportunity to lend a hand and help make a difference.

• STAYING CONNECTED • Jaye with Bob Green
Jaye visiting with Bob Green, Oprah Winfrey's personal trainer, at Crawford Long's HeartWise Risk Reduction Program, sponsored by Emory Health Care.

Jaye with Allison Sweany
In June 2008, Jaye had the opportunity to meet Allison Sweany, host of NBC's The Biggest Loser at The Rite Aid Health and Beauty Expo.

" In October 2004, I had the incredible opportunity to spend an inspiring evening with world renowned teacher, author, doctor, celebrity and one of the world's greatest spiritual leaders, Deepak Chopra, M.D. He presented his latest concepts on unlocking your inner source of ultimate wisdom from his new study: The Book of Secrets. Dr. Chopra is a pioneer in mind/body medicine. To hear him speak was such an extraordinary delight. His wisdom and capability to share are profound. I especially like his chapter, "The Universe Thinks Through You" from his new book. As such concepts apply to goals and fitness, I often remind my clients that in order for your body and mind to receive and experience the benefits of fitness, you must first believe that what you are asking for is possible. Believe! Ask and you shall receive. The universe, in its infinite wisdom, will then bring forth the result," says Jaye.

Jaye with Dr. Jack Barnathan

"Continuing my education and staying on top of the latest training information is very important to me. The more informed I am, the better I can assist my clients in reaching their full potential," Jaye said after joining personal training professionals from around the world in May for the New York Strength Performance Conference and meeting of the United States Master Trainers Association. Facilitated by nationally recognized strength coach and international lecturer
Dr. Jack Barnathan (left), who has been awarded the United States Presidential Certificate of Merit.

In the spring of 2004, Jaye spoke to Girl Scout Troop 3859 from Mary Lin Elementary in Candler Park about the importance of sports and fitness. "The girls were earning their GirlsSport 2004 patch. We talked about their favorite sports and which muscle groups are used, the importance of a healthy diet, how they can strive to eat healthy foods, and then we had a little exercise class. It was a lot of fun"

Boot Campers Participate in Duathlon!

In October 2006, campers from the Fall Boot Camp program had the opportunity to participate in the 7th Annual Fall Chill Duathlon in Hiawassee, Georgia, sponsored by The Great Smokey Mountains Triathlon Club. The duathlon consisted of a four mile run around Lake Chatuge, a sixteen mile road bike ride through the mountains, and another lakeside, two mile run.

"Along with feeling a sense of strength and accomplishment from boot camp graduation, I also wanted campers to have the opportunity to train and compete in a race. A number of campers had expressed interest, and I knew it would be a great way to boost confidences", said Jaye.

Congratulations to Jan Crofford who placed third in her age group as a solo female participant. Tremendous thanks to Jaye's relay teammate, Paula Girvan, for her stellar performance of the two mile leg. Jaye and Paula celebrated a third place victory in the relay category.

Training is currently under way for a spring duathlon or triathlon, location and date TBA. If you are interested in race training and participating as a solo or relay entry, contact Jaye for details.

• EXERCISE TIPS •
THE OVERHEAD FLY

Primary Muscles Targeted: Shoulders (Deltoids), Upper Back (Latissimus Dorsi, Upper Trapezius, Rhomboids) and Biceps.

Jaye loves movements that do "double-duty". This is an excellent movement for sculpting beautifully, toned shoulders and defining the muscles of the upper back, especially the rear delt / lat tie-in.

Choose dumbbells that feel challenging, yet safe to use. Practice with a few different sizes until you feel comfortable with your selection.

It is important to choose weights that will exhaust your muscles within 8 to 12 repetitions, leaving you unable to perform another repetition. Aim for 2 to 3 sets each time you train arms and back.

Exercise Start Position Exercise Movement Phase Exercise Mid Point
Start / End Position:
Stand upright with your feet shoulder-width apart. Slightly bend your knees, standing tall to elongate the spine, with your core muscles tight (bringing navel to spine). Hold the dumbbells upright with your arms and elbows close to the sides of your torso with palms facing each other.
Movement Phase (up and down):
Using an "arcking" motion with elbows bent, swiftly press the dumbbells up into an overhead position. Count "One, One- thousand". Continue to keep palms facing each other. Straighten your arms at the top of the movement.
Mid Point:
Bend your elbows and slowly lower the dumbbells, again, making an "arcking" motion. Continue to keep palms facing. Keep your chest up. Stand tall, pulling your shoulders back. Squeeze your shoulder blades together and concentrate on the feeling of the upper back muscles working to lower the weight of the dumbbells. Count "one, two, three." Return to start position. Repeat
